LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. The place you shoot your engagement session doesn't have to be special, but if you have a beautiful place the two of you love, don't be afraid to request it. Locations with interesting backdrops or beautiful scenery are always good choices.
CONSIDER YOUR TIMELINE. Do you plan to use these photos in your save-the-dates next month or are you taking the photos for yourselves? If you plan to use them for your wedding or invitations, make sure you schedule an engagement session ASAP.
CHOOSE A THEME. While entirely optional, picking a theme or style for your engagement photos can be a lot of fun, especially if it includes something you might do in everyday life. Pack a picnic and head to the park if that's where you spend your summer afternoons, or enlist your photographer in a hike to your favorite spot.
PLAN FOR OUTFIT CHANGES. Talk to your photographer about the number of locations and outfit changes you'd like to include ahead of time.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS. Whether you're both looking to enjoy a super casual engagement session or would prefer to dress to the nines, make sure you and your significant other are on the same page. If you're not, your photos may look off-balance.
BRING YOUR INSPIRATION. Don't be afraid to collect a few engagement or fashion spread photos you truly love and share them with your photographer. This will ensure the two of you and your photographer are aligned with the vision for the shoot.
BE YOURSELVES. One of the best things about an engagement shoot is that it offers you the chance to become more comfortable with your wedding photographer. On your wedding day, you're going to be spending a lot of time in front of the camera. Consider this a chance to figure out how to enjoy each other despite the lens and to polish up on those smiles.
